Home Remedies for Itchy Scalp

I have written a few blogs about Hair issues and remedies, but today I want to address the most annoying scalp issue-the itchy scalp. and home remedies for itchy scalp.Most people think Dandruff,itchy scalp ,flaky scalp and dry scalp are all same .But that is not true ,they all are different condition of scalp caused by different reasons. But these often go hand in hand like dry scalp causes flaking

Before we try to directly treat this condition, it is particularly important that we know what this condition is all about and why it happens. Itchy scalp, otherwise known as Scalp Pruritus, is quite a challenging condition therapeutically. This arises from a lot of conditions, the most common being Seborrheic Dermatitis, a kind of skin inflammation and Dandruff.

Some other causes can be fungal infections, allergies to certain hair products, diabetes (don’t be surprised), eczema, head lice and stress/anxiety. There are a bunch of other serious reasons that contribute to this condition. Though difficult, it would be highly beneficial if you know what could be causing your scalp to become itchy. If the condition is severe and lasts for longer than a week, then it is best to seek medical help.

However, there are few home remedies for itchy scalp that can help ease this condition and you can give anyone of these a try:
  1. Apple Cider Vinegar- ACV is known to have antifungal, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Simply dilute ACV in warm water and rinse your hair with it after shampooing. This should provide some relief and also helps in reducing dandruff.
  2. Olive oil or Coconut oil– A warm massage with either of the oils have proven to alleviate the itch. They also help in softening the itchy crusts and scales on the scalp. Coconut oil which contains Lauric acid, has proven to be beneficial for itchy scalps caused by eczema.
  3. Peppermint Oil- The Menthol in Peppermint oil can be really soothing, cooling and calming for an itch. It is seen that this oil is more beneficial for the condition caused by allergies. However, this oil needs to be diluted in a carrier oil, like Olive oil or Coconut oil and then applied to the scalp. Wash off with a mild shampoo or any anti-dandruff shampoo that suits you.
  4.  Lemongrass and Tea tree oil- These oils are well known for fighting dandruff, thereby reducing the itch. Tea tree is also a natural remedy for treating head-lice.
Apart from these home remedies for itchy scalp, there are few other options that you could try:

1.Salicylic Acid-This is beneficial for control the itch caused due to dandruff. It is a common ingredient found in many anti-dandruff shampoos. This plant based natural chemical helps in exfoliating the scalp allowing the hardened skin come off easily.

2.Selenium Sulphide-One ingredient that you need to look for in anti-dandruff shampoos as it prevents the flaky buildup on scalp. This is also used to tackle seborrheic dermatitis and reduced yeast infections on the scalp.

3.Zinc pyrithione– A substance which is commonly found in anti-dandruff shampoos in varying strengths. It helps itchy scalps is caused by dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. It seen that this substance has an effect on the high histamine levels that occur on the scalp affected by dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis.

4.Ketoconazole– An anti-fungal which helps in reducing yeast infections. This is an active ingredient in many anti-dandruff shampoos. In case you have swollen skin or open pores, then avoid using anything that contains Ketoconazole.
